Persians

Persians
Historians variously use the term Persian in both a general and a more specific sense. In the general sense, the term denotes a group of Indo-European-speaking people who settled in Iran in the late second millennium b.c. They eventually separated into somewhat distinct groups. The two most important of these were the Medes, who made their capital at Ecbatana, and the Persians who dwelled in Fars, directly north of the Persian Gulf, who gave rise to the Achaemenid dynasty. Two other Iranian-based peoples who later controlled Iran and Mesopotamia - the Parthians and the Sassanians - are also frequently referred to as Persians. In the more specific sense, the term denotes the Achaemenid rulers (Cyrus II, Cambyses, Darius, etc.) and their subjects, the inhabitants of the Persian Empire.
